The Cornish Rex is relatively a new cat breed originated about 60 years ago. These cats have no guard hair but only undercoat. The latter is fine, silky, and curly. This makes Cornish Rexes pretty recognizable.
History
A mutated litter of kittens born in 1950 on a United Kingdom farm became known as the Cornish Rex. "Cornish" was derived from the Cornwall farm and "rex" due to the kittens' unusual fur, which consisted only of fine down fur, otherwise known as a cat's undercoat.
One of the offspring was later bred with a Siamese cat in the United States. The resulting Cornish rex's long, whip-like tail and big ears are attributed to Siamese cat characteristics.
Personality
The Cornish rex is a very playful cat that possesses kittenish traits throughout its lifetime.
This is a cat that likes a great deal of interaction from its owners. The Cornish rex is known for its intelligence and likes to fetch balls and toys, enjoys the company of other pets, and is typically not a couch potato. The breed has a reputation for racing about, often performing acrobatics when very excited.
The Cornish rex is an adventurous breed, often finding unusual nooks and crannies to explore, such as the washing machine or refrigerator. It is easily adaptable to new situations and is known to get along well with shy or timid children.
Behavior
Cornish Rex is extremely playful cats with kittenish behavior throughout their adulthood. They are intelligent and hence learn tricks very quickly. They will play a game of fetch and play interactive games. Whenever they are excited they tend to perform funny acrobatics. These adventurous cats can adapt well with any situations.
Coat and Grooming
Cornish Rex cats come in a great variety of colours and patterns: solid, tabby, bicolour, tortoiseshell, "smoke" colours, and the colour point pattern that is typical for the Siamese breed.
Their short curly coat, as it has been mentioned, consists of undercoat only. It is extremely soft and silky. Very little grooming is necessary. Cornish Rexes are known to be little shedding cats.
Health and Care
Due to the unusual coat these cats can suffer from hypothermia if they are left to stay outdoors in chill weather conditions and also their body can overheat if they stay outdoors in summer. These are good indoor cats and their body temperature is slightly higher as compared to other cats. Due to their high activity levels these breeds can tend to be very hungry and cat owners should feed them healthy food. This adventurous breed is easy to care. Some cats with long and wooly hair will need soft brushing with a fine-tooth comb. Groom their hair gently without harming their skin.
Children and Other Pets
They do not harm children, but tend to get along well with shy children. These cats are friendly with other cats and dogs and do not have any problem with them.
