Havanese

The Havanese is growing in popularity as a great family pet. They are a happy dog who loves children, other dogs, and even cats. They are relatively easy to train because they just want to please their family. They are not an overly vocal dog which is surprising since they are a toy breed. This amicable pup does not like to be alone for long periods of time and can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone too long. The Havanese is a high maintenance dog and requires daily grooming to keep their coat silky smooth. They do not shed much but are not hypoallergenic. This spirited pup will make a wonderful addition to your home.

History

The Havanese is one of the Barbichon (later shortened to Bichon) family of small dogs originating in the Mediterranean in ancient times. Spanish traders brought some of these dogs with them as gifts for Cuban women, allowing them to establish trading relationships. In Cuba, the little dogs were pampered as the special pets of the wealthy. They became known as Habeneros, and eventually some found their way back to Europe where they were called the White Cuban. They became quite popular, not only as pets of the elite but also as performing dogs. Their popularity as pets waned, however, and their stronghold remained in the circus, where they performed throughout Europe as trick dogs. Eventually the breed declined in numbers to such an extent that it was almost extinct not only in Europe but also in its native Cuba. A few remained in Cuba, however, and three families with their Havanese left Cuba for the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. Most present-day Havanese descend from these dogs. It has gradually aroused attention from dog fanciers and pet owners, and in 1996 the first Havanese entered an AKC show ring, and was accepted for regular recognition as a member of the Toy Group as of the first day of 1999. The Havanese is also known as the Havana Silk Dog.

Temperament

The Havanese is a very happy and fun loving dog. They love their family and easily adapt to your schedule and lifestyle. They can be mischievous and will make their own fun if not given enough toys and attention. While not an overly barky dog, they will sound the alarm when visitors approach their home. The Havanese does not like to be alone, therefore, when you have to leave them, be sure to have plenty of toys for them to occupy their time. This busy dog can be destructive if not given proper training and plenty of toys. Even though they are a small dog, training is still essential. They are too smart for their own good and will try to get away with developing bad behavior. This affectionate dog loves children and other dogs. They learn quickly – years ago they were a featured dog in many circuses. They love to be told that they are good and thrive when praised for their efforts.

Appearance

Their long, fluffy coats tend to hide just how small Havanese dogs—and Havanese puppies—are. Under that luxurious mane, the breed stands at just 8.5 to 11 inches high at the shoulder, and weighs 7 to 13 pounds. The body is a bit longer than it is tall, and the tail is set high and arches over the back. The soft, wavy coat, which comes in many different colors, is sometimes “corded,” or formed into dreadlocks. A Havanese’s large, dark brown eyes seem to glint with a hint of mischief, cluing passersby in to his playful, intelligent nature. The walk of the Havanese is distinctive in its bounciness; that spring in the step first manifests in puppies, and doesn’t disappear with age.

Havanese puppies have a tendency to change colors, with their coats darkening, lightening, or changing hue entirely around 1 year old. Because of that, it’s not always possible to predict what a puppy might look like as an adult.

Grooming

For pets, the coat can be clipped short for easier care. If the coat is to be kept long it needs to be thoroughly brushed and combed at least twice a week. There is a lotion available to prevent the hair from splitting. Corded coats require special care. Dogs are not born with corded coats. It is a chosen groomed hair style. You can cord the coat or you can brush the coat. Without a human grooming the dogs the coats would be a matted mess. A drop coat is also a human controled style. Clip excess hair from between the pads of the feet. The feet themselves may be clipped to look round. Show dogs need a great deal more grooming. There is little to no shedding, so dead hair must be removed by brushing. Check the eyes and ears regularly. If the ears are not kept clean it is prone to get an ear infection. The beauty of a well groomed Havanese is that he still looks tousled and carefree. If you accustom your dog to nail clipping from puppy age, she should accept the routine as an adult. Teeth should be brushed weekly, and this is also best started as a puppy. This breed is good for allergy sufferers. They are a non-shedding, hypo-allergenic dog. However, the Shavanese (Havanese born with a short coat) which have coats more like the average dog and are comparable in looks to a Papillon, do shed. It is believed, but not yet 100% confirmed, that unlike the longhaired Havanese, the short haired Shavanese is not hypo-allergenic and therefore not a good choice for allergy sufferers.

Living Needs

Havanese dogs will be happy in a studio apartment, a sprawling mansion, or anywhere in-between. Mostly, these sociable animals want to have others by their side and prefer being in a lap to pretty much any other state. If left alone for long periods of time, a Havanese pup can get bored, and barking can become an issue (although Neabore says this breed does tend to bark less than many other small dog breeds). The breed is an excellent choice for seniors, families, and others looking for a constant companion. While the Havanese is energetic, he’s not especially active (he generally gets the workout he needs just bouncing around the house), so owners looking for canine camaraderie while hiking, backpacking, camping, and other outdoor endeavors may want to consider other options.

Havanese Facts

👉The Havanese can suffer from dry skin, perhaps because the little dog adapted so well to the humid conditions of its Caribbean homeland.

👉The Havanese is known for not shedding much hair; kind of surprising for a dog with so much of it, right? It is a perfect little dog for people with bad allergies, especially because they don’t require a great deal of outdoor exercise.

ðŸ‘‰Jane Fonda and Barbara Walters both own Havanese dogs. Tennis giant Venus Williams also owns a Havanese as well as comedian Daniel Tosh.

👉Even though the Havanese is a small dog with a big attitude, it has a great reputation for peaceful cohabitation with other pets. Some owners have even reported that their Havanese gets along famously with the cat.
