The Glasswinged butterfly is a beautiful brush-footed butterfly and is a member of the: subfamily Danainae, tribe Ithomiini, subtribe Godyridina. Greta oto adults exhibit a number of interesting behaviours, such as long migrations and lekking. The wings are translucent, with a wingspan of 5.6 to 6.1 cm (2.2 to 2.4 in). Its most common English name is glasswinged butterfly, and its Spanish name is “espejitos”, which means “little mirrors”.

The Glasswinged butterfly gets its name because the tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass, as it lacks the coloured scales found in other butterflies

APOLLO BUTTERFLY
APOLLO BUTTERFLY

The Apollo Butterfly or simply the Apollo is a very beautiful species of butterfly that were once widespread all over the European and Asian meadows. Unfortunately, nowadays they’re almost extinct and very rarely seen. They inhabit territories in meadows and mountains up to 2200 metres above sea level, ranging from Europe to Central Russia.

The various species of butterflies differ in their colouration and the size of the dots on their wings. Apollo’s five to eight centimeter long wings are creamy, with black and red or yellow spots. These colourful spots are intended to confuse predators, mostly birds, because the red or yellow dots hold a similarity to a mammal’s eyes, thus saving the butterfly from certain death. The small head holds a pair of eyes, as well as two long tentacles that act as smell and taste sensors. The butterfly’s chest and stomach are covered with small, white hairs. Three pairs of legs help the butterfly land on flowers, although they’re not quite well developed.
DEAD LEAF BUTTERFLY

The underside of this butterfly's wings are truly a remarkable work of evolutionary art; they look just like a dead leaf, with faded browns, blemish spots, even jagged edges. Meanwhile, the upperside of the insect's wings display bright colors more typical of butterflies. If they're looking for mates, they'll flash their colors, but if they want to hide from predators, they simply close their wings.

 EIGHTY EIGHT BUTTERFLY

This beautiful too is found in Central and South America and is named after the two eight shaped patterns found on its wings. The scientific name of this butterfly is Diaethria clymena and it has distinctive black and white ring like stripes on the wings. The underside of its wings is red and black in colour. The colouration and brightness of the pattern on its wings determine the exact location of the butterfly’s habitat. They stay close to human habitation and may be found in large groups sometimes. It is a relatively small insect with a wingspan of about 4 centimetres and feeds mainly on rotten fruits.

 FOREST GIANT OWL BUTTERFLY
FOREST GIANT OWL BUTTERFLY

It is one of the beautiful butterflies that belongs to the Owl Butterfly family and is native to South and Central America. It is a very large insect and may have a wingspan of up to 16 centimetres. Like other Owl Butterflies, this one too has large eyespots on its wings that look like the eyes of an owl. This tactic is used to scare away predators since the eye-spots look in the eyes of large predators from far. The wings have shades of yellow and brown with striped patterns. These butterflies can fly large distances and have a lifespan of 125 to 150 days.

Which of these butterflies have you seen? The next time you go to a nearby park or garden, be sure to look out for more amazing butterflies. What makes them interesting is also the life cycle they follow and the transformation of the pupa into a beautiful butterfly. This process has served as an inspiration for artists and writers all over the world.
