As much as we love our dogs there are things we can think of from the top of our heads that we wish they would stop doing. Disciplining them for misbehaviour is necessary sometimes and positive reinforcement is an important method you can use to train your furry friend. Their bad behaviour will be discouraged and they will be redirected to positive ones.

Here are a 5 tips to help you encourage positive behaviour in your dog.

1. Spend Time Together

Make sure to spend time regularly with your dog. When your dog sees that you care about him, he is more likely to reciprocate with gestures of affection, love, and joy. Dogs don’t like to be neglected (just like us!) and keep looking for your approval. Also, you should never yell at your dog. Instead, ask him to do things nicely and with a smile on your face.

2. Daily exercise

Depending on the size and how hyperactive your dog is determines how much exercise they need in a day to keep them healthy. For example, a German Shepard will need more exercise than a Chihuahua. You can either take them on a walk, let them run around in the yard, or play a game of fetch with them.

3. Feed them a Nutritious Dog-Appropriate Diet

What your dogs eat can affect their behaviour. Anxiety, hyperactivity, irritation, and being destructive can be directly linked to eating the wrong food. Stick to set meal times and discourage people from giving your pet food every time they beg. Resist feeling guilty when your pup shows their cute ‘begging for food’ face.

4. Reward Your Dog

We feel happy when we are praised, and dogs aren’t any different. Pat his head lovingly every time he does something well, especially after the challenges. Constant praises will encourage more good behavior from him and help strengthen your bond. Also, make sure to buy plenty of treats that you can give to your dog as rewards. Remember, dogs like treats way more than their food, and feel special every time they are rewarded with one!

5. Stimulate Your Dog Mentally

Challenging your dog with activities for mental stimulation helps your dog grow. Activities that challenge your dog can be fun and exciting especially if there is a reward that comes after. You can hide treats around your house and make him search for them or practice obedience training. It is a great way to avoid boredom and burn him off. Remember, a tired dog is a good dog.
