While Americans shell out an average of about $1675 per year on their dogs, purebred-loving pet parents are willing to pay more than five times that just to acquire the breed they've always dreamed of. Here are Five of the most expensive dog breeds in the world.

 

1. Samoyed

Average cost: $6,000 to 14,000. Samoyed has landed the first place on the list. A white elegant dog like Samoyed can be spotted from afar. They are characterized by their thick white fur. They have a double layer coating of magnificent skin. It is named after the people in Siberia. These small fluff balls do not gain much height in their life. The mail grows up to 53-60 cm and the females after that at 48-53 cm. These dogs are owned by the elite of Russia.

 

2. Chow Chow

This Chinese breed is one of the oldest dog breeds existing today, and they used to be good at herding, hunting, guarding, and pulling. Now they are good companions, coming in multiple colors, including red, black, blue, cinnamon, and cream. And they have a unique black tongue. Purebred puppies can cost up to $8,500.

 

3. Saluki

Saluki cost up to $2,500. Also known as the Royal Dog of Egypt, these regal dogs were the canine of choice for merchants traveling China’s Silk Road, making them one of the oldest breeds around. Similar to a greyhound, Salukis are long, slim and tall, with males growing up to 71cm tall and weighing 60lbs.

 

4. Lowchen

Löwchens are a petite, long-haired dog that have been a popular breed since the Renaissance, and are even featured prominently in paintings from that period. Nowadays, these "little lions" are extremely rare, pushing their cost to as much as $10,000 in some places around the world.

 

5. Akita

Akita

The Akita is a large, imposing breed from Japan. According to the AKC, these dogs are natural-born protectors. Buying an Akita will cost between $2,000 and $3,000.

According to Dogtime, "They  (Akitas) were originally used for guarding royalty and nobility in feudal Japan. These dogs also tracked and hunted wild boar, black bear, and sometimes deer. The Akita does not back down from challenges and does not frighten easily. Consequently, they are fearless and loyal guardians of their families. Yet they are also affectionate, respectful, and amusing dogs when properly trained and socialized."
